Scope

It is by now widely accepted that progress in patient safety so far ha s failed to meet ambitions. This is not least because efforts have focused on trying to keep the numbers of adverse events as low as possible. The focus has therefore mainly been on what has gone wrong or could go wrong – or in other words protective safety. Rather than only trying to prevent things from going wrong we need to recognise that clinical care largely goes well because clinicians can adjust their performance to match the circumstances.

Resilient health care acknowledges the need to go beyond preventing errors and failures, to find ways to strengthen the system of health care so that good care is enabled. In order to achieve this we must become better at recognising and learning from the vast majority of events that go well. Previous RHC workshops have developed the foundation for a Safety-II approach to patient safety – p roductive safety – and demonstrated how it can be brought into practice. This workshop will further consolidate the practical and theoretical foundations for resilient health care and discuss what we need to do in order to meet the challenges of the future.

Topics

The workshop will discuss the theory and practice of RHC, including:

• Case studies and applications of RHC
• Patient safety and forethought
• Managing by snapshots versus managing continuous performance
• The role of patient involvement in RHC
• The synthesis of safety and quality – a unified approach to managing all operations
• Crisis management

Format

The format of the workshop will take into account the strengths and limitations of a web-based conference, not least that participants will be in widely different time zones.

The workshop will take place on Monday 16th August, Tuesday 17 August, Wednesday 18 August with three 120 minute long sessions each day. This should make it possible for most participants to attend at least two sessions each day. The time slots for the three daily sessions will be as follows:

Each session will comprise three presentations (15 minutes presentation + 15 minutes discussion) followed by 30 minutes of general discussions.

In order to minimise the effect of potential technical problems, all presentations should be pre-recorded and uploaded ahead of time. The presenters must obviously be on-line both during the presentation and the following discussions.

Sessions will be recorded and made available on the rhcs.se website.

One of the time slots will be set aside for the General Assembly of the RHCS.

Submissions

The deadline for submission of abstracts (a title plus a 200-400 word description of the contents) is 24:00 CEST on Friday June 25, 2021. The abstracts should be submitted to wrkshp2021@rhcs.se

Registration is free of charge for members of the Resilient Health Care Society.
